This is the diary of Raymond Priestley who was the first salaried Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. An energetic innovative man with a colourful background in Antarctic exploration, he held strongly to the view that the university is a community of scholars.

The book is a great read. Priestley dressed for dinner at home and dined at the Melbourne Club, but I would put him well to the left of centre in politics and I’m sorry that Australia saw so little of him.

This is plainly the view of the editor of the diaries, who has a done a superb job. MUP has produced a handsome book, and the. Priestley was the first salaried Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

It was a time of great upheaval, as Australian universities reshaped and reasserted themselves after the Great Depression.'. The diary of a vice-chancellor: University of Melbourne / Raymond Priestley ; edited by Ronald Ridley Priestley, Raymond E. (Raymond Edward), The diaries Priestley kept while in Australia were published by Melbourne University Press in and again in as The Diary of a Vice-Chancellor: University of Melbourne A review can be found at Don Atikin website.

The book itself is very nicely bound, and is tiny - smaller in length and width than the average mass-market paperback, but at almost pages the depth of the book is quite a wedge. The book appears solidly bound and also has a built in ribbon bookmark. I love it/5(25).
